The Greeks started the Olympics, but modern culture has brought them back with more popularity, and with many new additions. The biggest addition to Modern Olympics is the Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics are based on sports events that take place cold climates, such as skiing and skating. Many contestants compete at the Olympics so they can bring pride and honor to their country and themselves. The Winter Olympics fascinate many people because modern culture creates a diverse and unique atmosphere and because speed skating shows how impressive and beautiful the Winter Olympics can really be. First, the modern winter Olympics have quite a history. In the beginning, the winter games were held in the same year as the summer Olympics. It was started because the Summer Olympics had figure skating in 1908, and in 1916 Germany had skiing as well. In 1924, the first Winter Olympics were held during the winter in Chamonix, France (“InfoPlease”). Later, in 1994, the Winter Olympics were held 2 years after the Summer Olympics. This made the cycle of the Olympics every other year, instead of both being in the same year. Today, there are 15 events which include hockey, figure skating, luge, bobsleigh, skiing, and curling. In each event, there are gold, silver, and bronze medals, and each winner also receives a certificate called a victory diploma (“Enchanted Learning”). The Olympics have been changed to fit modern culture, but they still have the same level of competition that the Olympics will always have. Last, speed skating arouses spectators all over the world by showing how sleek and agile the Olympic athletes can be. In the beginning, world-wide speed skating and skiing competitions were held in Sweden in 1901, and took place every four or five years. Speed skating was then included in the first Winter Olympics in 1924, which ended the Sweden speed skating in 1926 (“InfoPlease”). In the beginning of the Olympics, speed skating was one of the highlights of the Olympics. But in the 1930s, more and more hockey arenas were built, and the popularity of speed skating began to decline. In 1956, the Soviet Union joined the Olympics and brought back popularity to speed skating (“Speed Skating Canada”). In the history of Speedskating, USA’s Eric Heiden has won the most gold medals in a single Winter Olympics. USA Speedskating has won the most medals of any other Winter Olympic Sport for the US. US Speedskating has won 75 medals since 1924. Speedskating attracts many spectators from all over the world because of the sheer power and skill that it requires. In conclusion, because the modern Winter Olympics influence people’s activities and because some of the world’s favorite events include speed skating, the Winter Olympics are truly thrilling to watch, and even more so to compete in. Many athletes from all over the world train to represent their country, just to show they support and love their country. The Olympics are amazing because the whole world can see the best athletes and imagine that with enough training, anybody can be in the competing in the spotlight.

History Algeria participates in only the summer games.
Algeria has won 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals. The most recent winter Olympic Games was in Vancouver, Canada, and the next games will be in Sochi, Russia. The most recent summer Olympic Games was in Beijing, China, and the next games will be in London, England. Algeria has never hosted the Olympics. My favorite Summer Olympics event is swimming because I get to see the best swimmers in the world. My favorite Winter Olympics event is downhill skiing because it is fast and it takes a lot of practice, and anybody can win it if they do well when the pressure is on.
